Can AI Data Centres Really Move Into Space?

For years, the idea of putting serious computing infrastructure in orbit sounded more like a thought experiment than an engineering roadmap. That is changing.
In 2026 the US Federal Communications Commission accepted SpaceX’s application for an orbital data-centre system, while NVIDIA announced computing platforms aimed at orbital data centres, geospatial intelligence and autonomous space operations. SpaceX itself now describes orbital AI compute as an active development area.
Why move compute off Earth?
The attraction is easy to understand at a high level. AI systems require enormous amounts of computing infrastructure. Large terrestrial data centres need electricity, cooling, land, networking and physical construction. Space offers access to solar energy and creates the possibility of processing some data closer to where satellites collect it.
That does not mean orbit is an easy substitute for a data centre on Earth. Launch cost, radiation, heat rejection, repair, networking, latency and hardware reliability all become harder problems. The economic case also depends on which workloads are being moved and how much data needs to travel between Earth and orbit.
From edge computing to orbital data centres
One important distinction is between doing useful AI processing in space and building enormous space-based data centres. On-orbit processing already has practical reasons to exist: satellites can analyse imagery or sensor data before transmitting only the most useful results back to Earth. Larger orbital data-centre concepts take that logic much further.
NVIDIA’s 2026 space-computing announcement shows that mainstream computing suppliers are now designing for this environment. That is a meaningful signal even if the largest orbital-data-centre visions take years to prove.
So, can it really happen?
Some AI computing can clearly move into space because it already is. The bigger question is whether orbital infrastructure can become economically competitive at data-centre scale. That remains open.
Elon Musk’s line — “Space is the only way to scale at scale” — is therefore best understood as a statement about long-term infrastructure limits, not a description of today’s data-centre market. Its importance is that companies are now beginning to build and regulate the technologies that could test the claim.
